Refrigeration Issue Resolved (Finally)

Well, after changing all the electronic components of our Dometic Refrigerator and still failing to resolve the E-1 error issue – I gave up 🤷‍♂️.

Yep, me, Brickster, who can fix anything has met his match and was beaten 😵😵😵 by a refrigerator .

So I hitched up Blue Streak an took the Airstream to the RV service expert in my area.  It took them 20 minutes to run through several test.  The results (drum role please) it was the “thermocouple”.  Yep, after 16 years it burned out!  Who would have known?

Basically, A thermocouple is a sensor used to measure temperature.

Thermocouples are made with two wires of different metals, joined together at one end to form a junction. … As the temperature changes, the two dissimilar metals begin to deform, causing a change in resistance. This sends a minuscule message via an electrical impulse back to the Control Board. This informs the control board that burner is working correctly.  No message, no refrigeration 😕.

Since we Boondock 95% of the time refrigeration is very important.  You can go without your hotwater tank working.  Even go without your furnace.  But not Boondocking for two weeks without refrigeration!

Bottom line is that they replaced the thermocouple and now ($250.00 cdn parts and labour later) all is well. 😎

What have I learned from this?

First, Dometic really cannot give you any help to resolve an issue.  All they are really able to do is up-sell their components (thus the $350.00 control board that was not required).  Chalk it up to learning experience 😞.  Second, do research to find a repair service that is reliable and honest (I asked my auto mechanic of 20+ years where he has his trailer serviced).

Since it’s almost time for this season to end, I will finish-up the winterization process and begin planning for the 2020 travel season.  Blue Streak is safely tucked away 😴.  I will check on her every couple of weeks 😎.
